Surface treatment guide for pre-painted wooden claddings
Durable surface with Pinja products
Tikkurila Coatings has for many years resolutely developed its products to meet the requirements of timber construction and markets. The result is the Pinja product family, which meets the various needs of the building trade, sawmill industry and end-users.
Claddings treated with Pinja products are user-friendly and their maintenance and repainting are easy. Environmental hazards caused by the eradication of panels have been minimized.
Exterior wooden surfaces have to protected
Wood is exposed to different kinds of external environmental factors. Sunlight, temperature changes, humidity and various mechanical and biological factors place stress on wood. The same factors impose themselves on surface treatment, the process that gives wooden surfaces a beautiful gloss and colour and also protects them from external stresses.
Good result requires right conditions and application methods
When priming is done at the factory under controlled, uniformly warm conditions, the weather and other stress factors cannot affect the result. This prolongs the lifetime of claddings significantly.
Transportation and storage of claddings
During transportation and storage, treated claddings have to be stored in dry conditions and protected from water with covering.
During storage, timber has to be prevented from being in contact with the ground.
To be taken into account under construction
In order to prevent moisture penetrating deeper than the surface, cut surfaces should be primed carefully with Valtti Base Priming Oil and nailing should be done at the right angle.
Pre-treatment of top coating
All dirt and loose material should be removed from the surface. Metal parts that rust should be protected with Rostex anti-corrosive primer.
Application conditions
The surface and wood to be painted must be dry. The air temperature, the surface to be painted and the paint must be at least + 5 ºC and the relative humidity of the air below 80%. Ensure that the outcome will be long-lasting by maintaining the recommended application conditions throughout the entire painting work and drying.
How and when to paint
Use the products below as top coats. Paint the surface once or twice with unthinned paint by following the instructions mentioned in the data sheets. The timing also affects the durability of the surface treatment. The less the wood is exposed to stresses before painting, the longer the surface treatment will last. Hence we recommend that the top coating be done immediately after the construction stage, not later than 6 to 10 months after construction. If the painting is delayed, the surfaces should be treated with Öljypohja Priming Paint before the actual painting.
Ensure a successful result
The best possible result is achieved by using Tikkurila´s priming products, primers and top coats together and by using the right application method. Use the same paint for maintenance painting as well.
